60 Second Interview: Digital TV production student
Abir Mohammad is a digital TV production student at Ravensbourne. He tells us why he loves his creative course and gives his advice for getting the most out of your uni experience.
What course are you studying?
I'm studying Digital Television Production at Ravensbourne.
What did you study at school / college?
I studied A-levels in media studies, ICT and English literature, with an AS in business studies. I also studied for a Creative and Digital Media Diploma.
Why did you choose this course?
I have a huge passion for television, and wanted to focus my media-related studies on that. Ravensbourne had a great course structure, which revolves around live TV, location production and more, so I knew that I’d be able to hone my crafts in things that I was already confident in, as well as gain even more experience/interests in newer fields.
Why did you choose this uni?
The TV studio, access to equipment and connected location were all huge reasons behind me choosing this university. Access to the studio during both class and recreational slots allowed me to improve my craft with a tutor by my side, as well as to use that knowledge in my own time.
There is a ton of equipment to choose from (almost too much) so I knew that I would always have what I needed for course and independent projects. Also, the location is very connected. We’re a few stops away from top locations in London, as well as being literally next door to the O2.
What are the facilities like?
The facilities are great! We have access to a lot of equipment from the Central Loan Resources. We can easily book rooms for filming/meetings, as well as access nine floors for space for almost anything else.
What's the student experience like?
The experience is wonderful. There are so many different people at the university coming from different backgrounds. There’s a lot to get involved in, and a lot of opportunities to create for yourself. Everyone is very friendly, so socialising isn't a problem here!
Best thing about studying at your uni?
Everyone is so creative here. It's refreshing being around people with different levels of expertise, and being able to learn from one another. There are also some great opportunities to learn and meet other creatives, such as The Degree Show. This show offers you the chance to showcase and enhance your skills on a slightly bigger platform than normal, and you can work alongside creative minds from all sorts of courses!
Have you done any work experience?
I have previously worked at VICE/VICELAND, Empire Magazine, as well as a few one-day shoots throughout my time here.
What are your future career plans?
I want to write and direct scripted television. I’ve been able to become a better writer and director through class sessions as well as out-of-hours projects.
Any tips for students thinking about going to uni?
Take advantage of every opportunity you can get! There is so much to do here that your class hours will not cover even half of it. Look up different opportunities on the website/in the weekly Round-Up email and take advantage of it. Ravensbourne is extremely creative and holds a ton of events for you to get involved in, so either get involved in already existing projects, or create your own!
