Marketing is all about figuring out what people want and making them crave your product. Launching a new pair of trainers? Selling concert tickets? Marketing pros know how to get it in front of the right people.

Content creator

As a content creator, you’ll make viral videos, craft memes, and write cool posts for social media.

Copywriter

Copywriters come up with iconic slogans (like Nike’s 'Just Do It') and create buzz for the next big app.

Digital marketer

Digital marketers plan online ads, track clicks, and make sure their brand is trending everywhere.

Event planner

Event planners organise everything from influencer parties to product launches and festival promotions.

PR officer

PR officers keep brands in the headlines for all the right reasons, managing their public image and media presence.

Social media manager

Some people make a living just by creating content on TikTok all day. Others produce TikTok content alongside posts for other social media channels.

How do I get started?

🛠️ Can I do an apprenticeship?

Skip uni, get paid while you learn and gain real experience. Check out apprenticeship programmes like event assistant, marketing manager, market researcher or digital marketer.

🎓 Is uni an option?

Definitely! Look for degrees in marketing, business, psychology, or creative fields like design and media. Many marketing pros study English or sociology.

⭐ How can I stand out?

Start a side project! Whether it’s a blog, TikTok, or Instagram account, showcase your creative skills and build an impressive portfolio.

What qualifications can I get?

What degree options do I have?

You can start your marketing career with pretty much any degree – especially arts and humanities. But if you want to specialise, look for a BA in advertising, marketing or PR is a great start. If you want to go further, consider a master’s in digital marketing.

What qualifications will an apprenticeship give me?

Apprenticeships in roles like PR executive or marketing manager will give you qualifications from level 3 (like a diploma) all the way up to level 6 (the same level as a degree!)

How can I show employers I stand out?

A certification is a qualification from an industry body showing you’re a pro in your field. You can get certificates from organisations like Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM), Institute of Practitioners in Advertising (IPA) or Chartered Institute of Public Relations (CIPR). You might work towards certification on your apprenticeship or later on.

What’s chartered status?

Go pro with titles like chartered marketer or chartered PR practitioner. It’s a great way to take your career to the next level!

How can I boost my digital skills?

Soup up your CV with free courses from Google Digital Garage or get certified through HubSpot, Facebook Blueprint, or DMI.

5 fun facts you didn’t know

Ads are sneaky

Did you know food in ads isn’t actually real? That juicy burger? It’s likely covered in spray-on chemicals. Ice cream? It’s probably mashed potatoes (because real ice cream melts under hot studio lights).

Gen Zers trust online brands

About a third of Gen Zers and millennials are more likely to buy from a brand that’s on social media.

The internet is the top place to advertise

UK brands get 80% of their ad revenue (the money they make from advertising) from the internet. In second place? TV (11%), followed by newspapers (just 3%).

The most expensive ad ever made?

Chanel dropped £18 million on a single commercial featuring Nicole Kidman in 2004. Yep, £18 million for one ad!

You DON’T see 10,000 ads per day

There’s this stat floating round the internet that you see 10k ads per day – but according to the BBC’s More or Less programme, it’s no way near that. Their experts saw between 20 and 500!
