Course overview

Get a flying start and accelerate your progress towards being an ICAEW Chartered Accountant with our Business Accounting and Finance with work placement BSc honours degree. Put classroom theory into commercial practice with three integrated paid work placements.

The ‘Flying Start’ degree is a collaboration between Newcastle University, PwC and ICAEW. It is the most established course of its kind. It combines academic study and integrated paid professional work placements in PwC’s Audit practice. You'll progress towards the ICAEW Chartered Accountancy qualification, the ACA

In 2022 we celebrated 20 years of our Flying Start programme. Current students, alumni and staff have shared their views and experiences of the programme since its inception in 2002.

Throughout your journey, a team of dedicated staff from both Newcastle University and PwC will support you. They'll help you:

  • develop the business skills you need to gain a degree
  • progress towards a professional qualification
  • succeed on paid work placements

This will help you towards hopefully receiving a full-time graduate offer with PwC. You could be a fully qualified ICAEW Chartered Accountant just over a year after graduation - a truly flying start.

This degree was designed with, and is professionally accredited by the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW).

Successful graduates of this degree will have completed 12 of the 15 papers of the ICAEW Associate Chartered Accountant (ACA) qualification.

You’ll join one of PwC’s audit teams, working on external audits. We recognise audit as a deep specialism and give our people access to the best opportunities.

Our people take pride in their profession, working together with flexibility, agility and intelligence. They put the team first and are passionate about the work they do, challenging themselves and each other to deliver high quality.

PwC's Flying Start Financial Bursary

The Flying Start financial bursary looks to support students with the day-to-day costs of university life. At PwC, the development and wellbeing of our people is paramount and we’re delighted to be able to award a bursary to support our students to be the best they can be. If you meet the eligibility criteria, and join one of our applicable Flying Start Accounting programmes in autumn 2025, you’ll be awarded a £10,000 bursary, split across the four years of the degree.

If you believe you’re eligible for the financial bursary and you apply for one of the applicable Accounting Flying Start programmes then we’ll be in touch with you during the application process to outline the next steps. This is a fantastic opportunity to develop your confidence, your skills for the future, and your experience of work and university, all while being supported financially.

The criteria for the bursary is set out below which you can review to determine your own eligibility. You need to meet all five of the points as follows:

  • Have ‘Home Funding’ status, which means you’re living in the UK or Republic of Ireland, and EU nationals with settled status in the UK.
  • Have applied to study on the Accounting Flying Start degree Programme (and subsequently successfully start on the programme in September 2025).
  • Have a household income of <£35,000 per annum as assessed by Student Finance (this will be assessed once you are accepted onto the degree programme and apply to Student Finance).
  • Be able to demonstrate a commitment to a career in Audit at PwC during the assessment process.
  • Have attended a non-fee paying school (unless you received a bursary or scholarship to attend in which case we’ll review on a case-by-case basis).
