A place for students to ask questions about Year 10 work experience. You can ask about anything (work experience-related of course!). For example you could post a comment if:

  • You're struggling to find a placement
  • You don't know where you should apply
  • You are nervous about starting

Hi @Sagastrong. Often work experience can be arranged informally even if there is no formal scheme. I’d suggest that your sister Google “animal shelters near [your area]” – this will give her a list of nearby organisations in the animal care industry who she could contact. I’d suggest phoning up and asking directly – if the receptionist is unsure, your sister could ask for the email address or phone number of the staff-member who might. Also, does she know about animal care apprenticeships? We have an article here: https://successatschool.org/advicedetails/897/animal-care-apprenticeships If she’s interested, I’d suggest searching Find An Apprenticeship site for any opportunities.

(1/2) Hi @MadyD. The best Y10 work experience isn’t just any old placement you can find, it’s one that fit into your long-term career plans – what job you’d like to do when you finish education. If you can find a placement that matches this, you’ll get the chance to gain skills that are directly relevant to the job, which will look great on your CV and set you apart from others when you apply for jobs. Maybe you’ve got no idea what you want to do when you leave education - the good news is, if work experience at your school is in June/July, you’ve got a bit of time to think about it. Take a look at this article for some help: https://successatschool.org/advicedetails/576/What-job-should-I-do%3F (continued in next comment)

(2/2) @MadyD: As for finding work experience, you’ll be in a stronger position when you know roughly what you’d like to do because it’ll narrow down the search. For example, you can Google employers in the right field in your local area and start phoning them to ask if they’ll take you on for your placement – often they’ll be happy to even if they don’t have a formal scheme. Also think about what experience you’d like to gain on your placement, and tell them this before you start, so you don’t just end up making the coffee! I am interested in studying astrophysics in the future, but I do not think there is any work experience in this field of activity.

Hi @MadyD. Try Googling "astrophysics work experience", you may be surprised by the results - there are several unis and research institutions who offer some kind of work experience for students.

You could also contact other universities with an astrophysics department and ask what kind of work experience you should be searching for and if there is anyone they can put you in touch with. Ask about work experience within the department itself.
