Tesco

About
At Tesco, our core purpose is to serve our customers, communities and planet a little better every day. This is underpinned by our 3 Tesco Values:
No one tries harder for customers
Understanding people – customers, colleagues, communities – and what matters to them, and then trying to make those things better, is at the heart of Tesco.
We treat people how they want to be treated
We know that looking after our colleagues in a culture of trust and respect is essential to our success as a business.
We want colleagues to feel recognised and be rewarded for the work they do. We also offer a range of opportunities to help develop their skills and careers, as well as supporting their health and wellbeing.
Every little help makes a big difference
Our motto 'every little helps' goes beyond just helping with your shopping. Here are just a few of our initiatives:
- Tesco Stronger Starts has committed to providing over £5 million a year to fund healthy food and activities for schools and children’s groups.
- We work closely with food banks and local charities to help feed people in local communities.
- To help in the fight against kids’ tooth decay, we reduced the price of our Pro Formula Steps dental range by 20%.
Our Tesco Values are a vital part of our culture. They make sure that everyone at Tesco understands what's important – about how we work together as a team, and how customers are at the heart of what we do.
Apprenticeships
Giving young people real opportunities
We're really passionate about supporting young people to find the right career path for them. That’s why we launched our Stronger Starts Retail Apprenticeship programme to give young people genuine opportunities.
We know that going from school to employment can be a huge step. That’s why we’ve introduced part-time apprenticeship options, making it more accessible for everyone, including carers and neurodivergent applicants. So, if you can’t commit to full-time (36 hours/5 days), you can choose to work 21 hours/3 days or 28 hours/4 days.
What’s in it for you?
- Earn £22,500 while you learn
- Gain a Level 2 National Standard in Retail, equivalent to 5 GCSE passes
- Job security – get a permanent position after the apprenticeship
- Long-term career opportunities
- Practical, transferable skills for life
What you'll be doing
The apprenticeship is based entirely in-store and takes a minimum of 12 months to complete. You’ll join a supportive and inclusive team, spending time doing a range of activities such as marketing, business and technology. You’ll also gain hands-on store experience, picking orders, restocking, and supporting customers and community events.
Approved by the industry and our apprentices
We’ve helped 100s of apprentices start their careers and are proud to be placed 30th in The 2024 Top 100 Apprenticeship Employer rankings. Here’s what some of our Stronger Starts Retail Apprentices and People team have to say:
- “I’m progressing through the apprenticeship really well and have a great team who support me, it has changed my life completely for the better.” - Stronger Starts Retail Apprentice
- “I’ve learnt a lot already and it’s only my first week.” - Stronger Starts Retail Apprentice
- “I was truly inspired by the candidates I had on my induction…supporting them to make a great start in life was truly a pleasure.” - People Partner

What it's like working here
Our office in Welwyn Garden City is a relaxed and friendly environment, with a casual dress code. We have flexible workspaces and places to enjoy down-time with colleagues, like sports pitches and cafes.
Diversity and Inclusion
Everyone’s welcome at Tesco
Diversity and inclusion have always been at the heart of Tesco. It's key to our values: we treat people how they want to be treated.
We want our colleagues to feel they can always be themselves, and we're committed to helping them be at their best.
Across the Tesco group, we're building an inclusive workplace, where we actively celebrate the cultures, personalities and preferences of our colleagues, who reflect the diversity of the communities we serve.
Inclusive networks
We know how important it is to meet other colleagues and support each other. That’s why our colleagues have created a range of D&I networks.
From LGBTQ+ and Race & Ethnicity to Disability and Parents & Carers, there are a number of great networks you can be part of. It's a unique opportunity to come together to find out how others manage their careers, meet people in different areas of the business, or even just chat and share ideas.
Sustainability
From climate change to health and waste to diversity
We've built sustainability into our purpose, strategy and business plans. We know that our business depends on the world around us. And, as the UK's largest retailer, we know we can make a big difference.
Our commitment to operating in a responsible and sustainable way reflect our values. And they are the responsibility of everyone at Tesco.
Here are just a few of our highlights
- We were the first business to set a zero carbon goal back in 2009. Since 2015, we've reduced Group Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 61%.
- We aim to be carbon neutral across our own operations by 2035.
- We're working with suppliers and partners to achieve net zero across our supply chain by 2050.
