About

Managed by the British Horseracing Authority, careersinracing.com is a portal of information on careers across the whole of the racing industry.  The team implements recruitment initiatives and marketing campaigns to promote racing careers and pathways to a range of audiences from school age to those looking to change careers.

The popular job board on careersinracing processes over 2000 jobs a year and is THE place to look for a job in racing.

The Careersinracing team are on hand to give advice to anyone that wants to think about working in the sport. They provide a number of free courses year round including Experiential Days, Virtual Open Days and Development Programmes. They also do "Explore Racing" Days across the country at various Racecourses and Racing Colleges. These special events are a chance to explore the diverse range of career opportunities which racing presents, as well as being a great taster experience if you don't know much about the sport!

Work Experience

Careersinracing can arrange various work experience placements.

We can arrange attendance at the British Horseracing Authority’s head office to discover how the governing body of the UK’s second largest spectator sport is run and the various departments that make this happen. From arranging placements on various racing yards nationwide depending on current experience to spending the day shadowing a staff member or team at a racecourse, Careersinracing can provide a number of work experience opportunities.

If you are thinking about a career in the racing industry, our training providers offer open days to give potential students an opportunity to look around the facilities and find out more about the career prospects and training available. You will also get the chance to meet the staff and the horses.

Apprenticeships

If you are still at school and looking for your next step after leaving, you could consider applying for foundation training in racehorse care at either National Horseracing College or The British Racing School and go on to complete an apprenticeship whilst working in a racing yard.  Similar options are available if you live in Scotland via the Scottish Racing Academy.

There is also The National Stud  based in Newmarket which offers training courses for people who have a passion for the Thoroughbred breeding and bloodstock industry.

Graduate

The British Horseracing Development Programme (formerly known as the British Horseracing Graduate Development Programme) is well known and highly regarded throughout the British Horseracing industry.  It starts with a two-week induction course, usually held in July, and is followed by a paid summer placement of at least 8 weeks, sometimes longer.

This Programme, which has been running for over for 30 years, provides an invaluable source of talent to the sport and its supporting industry.  The Programme was renamed in 2021 and is now an early careers programme suitable for candidates with Degrees, Higher Apprenticeships or equivalent skills and capabilities.  To gain entry onto this programme you will need to be successful at an assessment centre.  Even if you are not successful you still get careers support from the careersinracing team and the opportunity to attend careers seminars and events.
