Why Success at School Loves Hegarty Maths

At Success at School, we've long been fans of Hegarty Maths. So when we discovered that they had a brand new website and Colin Hegarty himself had been nominated for the Global Teacher Prize, we felt it was about time that we shared some of the love with our students.

Hegarty Maths is a website dedicated to helping students with their Maths work. Founded by school teacher Colin Hegarty in 2011, the website began as a series of Math tutorial videos, which were uploaded to YouTube for students to watch in their own time.

Mr Hegarty realised that when students get stuck in class, they sometimes don't ask for help, so having a whole series of YouTube videos to refer to would be a great resource.

Over the next few years, Mr Hegarty's YouTube videos gained more and more views and in February 2016, their brand new website was launched.

We've outlined some of the reasons that we love Hegarty Maths and the new website:

They encourage students to work hard

In a recent article in the Guardian, Mr Hegarty talks about how hard work helped him achieve his status as a leading teacher and entrepreneur. One of the core messages behind Hegarty Maths is that there's no substitute for hard work. As Mr Hegarty says himself, the secret is practice. The more you practice Maths questions, the better you'll become and we couldn't agree more.

They upload videos to YouTube

Perhaps one of the best things about Hegarty Maths is that they're not afraid to share their advice. They upload a lot of their videos to YouTube for anyone to watch and learn. These bitesize vids last around 10 minutes each and explain complicated Math concepts in a simple, straightforward way. Here's an example of the types of videos you can expect to find on the Hegarty Maths website:

It's based on the National Curriculum

All importantly, the tutorials created by Hegarty Maths are based on the UK National Curriculum, so students studying at Key Stage 3, GCSE and A-Level are able to use the website as a supplement to the coursework they cover in school. We think this is one of the main reasons for the website's success.

If students are struggling with Maths in school, they can use Hegarty Maths at home to top up their knowledge and work through specific examples. The tutorials are also useful for students who may have been off sick and missed a few weeks of school. Because Hegarty Maths covers all topics within the National Curriculum, students can easily catch up on missed work in the evening or at weekends thanks to the website's resources.

It's easy to use and the new website is well-designed

At Success at School, we love a clean-looking website and the new Hegarty Maths design is just that. It's easy to navigate and doesn't take long to find what you're looking for. We think the design will particularly appeal to students who need to find Maths solutions quickly. Have a look around the Hegarty Maths website for yourself and tell us what you think.
