Meet Jordan

1. Hey Jordan! Can you give us a quick intro?

Hey! I’m Jordan Lewis from Mid-Wales. I’m currently in the sixth year of my Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship. By the end, I’ll have a law degree and be a qualified solicitor.

2. What's it like working in law?

A mix of challenges and rewards! I work 9-5, with Mondays for study. Right now, I’m in the commercial and agricultural department doing legal research, drafting, and advising clients.

Life as an Apprentice

3. What’s your typical day like as an apprentice?

I work 9-5 – a mix of office days and working from home. Mondays are for studying. It can be tricky balancing it all, but once you find your rhythm, you soon get into the groove.

4. What's the best part of your apprenticeship so far?

I loved speaking to students at my local high school about law careers and even working with BBC Bitesize! It feels great to give back and share what I’ve learned with others.

5. How do you balance work and study?

It’s all about finding a routine that works. And having Mondays dedicated to study really helps keep things organised.

6. Do you find it hard to switch off?

I have my tricks for that! I love hitting the gym or getting outdoors to switch off after a busy day.

7. What was it like moving from school life to the working world?

It was a big adjustment, especially having fewer holidays. But earning my own salary and gaining real-world experience makes up for it. It feels great to be independent!

The Journey to Get Here

8. What made you choose an apprenticeship over going to university?

Avoiding student debt and earning a salary while learning was a huge plus. Plus, I was eager to start working right away. It’s a great way to get hands-on experience in the field from day one.

9. Any challenges in your apprenticeship journey?

Adjusting to fewer holidays compared to school was tough. And balancing work and study takes some getting used to, but the support from my team and real-world experience makes it all worth it.

10. What's the most rewarding part of your journey so far?

Seeing my hard work pay off. It’s been a long road, but the real-world experience, combined with earning my own salary, makes it all worth it. Plus, I’ve met some amazing people along the way!

Finding an Apprenticeship

11. How did you hear about legal apprenticeships?

It wasn’t easy. My school didn’t even know you could become a solicitor this way. But after doing my own research, the idea of gaining practical experience while avoiding student debt made sense for me.

12. Was it tough applying for apprenticeships?

Definitely! I got a lot of rejections, and it was hard to deal with at 18. But I stayed motivated by reminding myself of my goals – earning my own money, buying a house, and living life on my terms.

13. Did your family support your decision to do an apprenticeship?

My parents, especially my mum, were super supportive. My mum is a huge advocate of apprenticeships and even encourages my siblings to consider them over university.

Jordan's Top Tips for You

14. What advice would you give to students thinking about an apprenticeship?

Let your personality shine through in your applications and interviews! Being yourself is what makes you stand out. And remember, the journey can be tough, but it’s so rewarding if you stick with it.

15. What’s your top study tip for fellow apprentices?

Take digital notes! It saves so much time, and it’s easier to keep track of everything when you’re juggling both work and study. Also, don’t stress about the small stuff – it all comes together in the end.

16. Any advice for managing rejection when applying for apprenticeships?

Rejection is tough, but don’t let it stop you! Keep reminding yourself of your goals and why you want it so badly. Stay determined, and you’ll eventually find the right opportunity.

Fun Stuff!

17. What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I’m a fitness enthusiast, so I’m usually at the gym or getting outdoors. It helps me clear my head. I also love a good binge-watch—right now, I’m obsessed with House of the Dragon!

18. What's your go-to lunch during a busy workday?

A tuna pasta salad—simple but effective… although it’s so tempting to blow my entire salary on Greggs or Subway sometimes!

19. Any comfort food you enjoy after a long day?

Definitely fajitas or chilli-con carne. Both are easy to whip up and super satisfying after a hectic day.

20. How do you stay focused when studying?

Country music! I know, it’s not everyone’s cup of tea, but it really helps me concentrate. It’s become my study soundtrack over the years.
