Work Experience Listing

Watch Topic

We are creating a list of work experience programmes offered by employers in the UK to help schools/colleges understand what's available to them.

Ambassadors, we’d like your help:

1. School staff survey

We are going to send a survey to all of our careers advisors and teachers, asking them to name local and national employers they would rate for the quality of their work experience programmes.

We will use this information to inform our employer work experience listings and hope to create a ranking based on the info we receive.

Please view the survey by clicking the link below, and let us know:

  • Are there any specific questions you think we should ask which we haven’t?
  • Is anything else missing from the survey?
  • Is there anything we can take out?
  • Anything else you'd like to tell us.

It would be worth asking - how many students the employer takes at any one time. What career sector interests can they accommodate?

Looks really good, although you could state which age range(s) the scheme is suitable for.

Great point - we do ask for that info, so we'll ensure we'll add it to the final version.

We have the issue of schools not being responsible for pupils over the holiday periods from an insurance point of view so any schemes that take place out of the school term would need to be arranged and agreed by parent / carer.
When work experience takes place during school term time, it is often within a set time frame - would there be a way of searching both from location and from time frame?

We currently only have students up to Year 10 so as this is our first year of offering WEX to our students, I may not be able to objectively compare the quality of local WEX opportunities until later in the academic year. That said, Leeds Audi, West Yorkshire Police, Leeds Grand Theatre, Freeths Solicitors, Sky, Lupton Fawcett, Curtins and KPMG in Leeds have all been very professional and efficient in helping us to source work placements for students in the school holidays and have offered a structured and meaningful period of work experience for students involved.

I will be sending out the employer survey to all of our local contacts and asking them to fill in the information to contribute to your research - look forward to reading the feedback in due course, as this is a fantastic idea for schools and students!

The article template itself looks grand; as other have mentioned above, the only additions I might suggest would be the age range for the placement and potentially a more detailed location ([link removed] where in Manchester?), as some of the students we work with would definitely struggle to travel long distances to reach a WEX placement.

For the survey, I think it would be worth allowing the user to add multiple answers for questions 3-10, as many schools will be working with hundreds of different employers and so narrowing this down to just one for each criterion could be quite difficult.

For the placement article, I think you should also include what age group the programme is targeted at, as well as a job title for the student while they are there. Also agree with the person above that adding a specific location would be much for useful for the student, especially if they rely on public transport or are disadvantaged.
