what is the salary like?

When the training, a cadet may get around £10,000 a year, but all course fees are paid for and your time on ship is paid for too. that money is yours. When you qualify as an officer, a starting salary may be around £26,000 and depending on the company, and voyage route, may be tax free.

Is there any chance we could get work experience?
(Original post by CareersAtSea  6 years ago)
Work experience may be possible, but it depends where you are located and the companies that are nearby. It may be office work in the operation of a shipping company, but some companies will allow you on their vessel. This is something we may be able to help with if you are interested.

We are located in the humber region, what kind of companies would it be beneficial for us to get in contact with?
(Original post by CareersAtSea  6 years ago)
Well, being near the Humber you are extremely lucky to have access to companies and ports! P&O are the obvious choice, but there is a 'Green Humber' initiative that is linking companies up to progress this work. also, Modal Training are not too far form you and a trip to their simulator is well worth a day out! A bit of extra time and i would be able to find you some more if you wish?

Thanks for letting us know. One of our teachers will be in contact.

What countries have you been to with the company you are with?

Some companies operate worldwide, and some only around the UK. If you do research into the companies, you will get more of an idea of where they work. Some people at sea work around Australia, visit the USA and even some Pacific Islands. So much variety.
