Watch Topic

We are now offering A Level Engineering at school.  Do emplyers think the students should  still be studying Maths and Physics at A Level with this subject as it is quite new?

They don't have to - assuming there is a strong Maths and Physics element to the degree? Sometimes with the new subjects we have to check with the university we work with (for our Broadcast Engineering Sponsored degree) to make sure they take it. However we know for sure that Maths/ Physics get you on to the degree course. However for our broadcast operator apprenticeship (which isn't a degree course) - the A'level is absolutely fine. Perhaps the best advice to students might be that they ought to do alongside if they are planning on a degree sponsorship course or going to university?

Shipping companies currently look for Maths and Physics but Engineering would certainly be looked upon favourably when people are looking to apply for this career.

Generally, we look to take on prospective employees at graduate (or undergraduate level) of through a modern apprenticeship. A level Maths is always a significant benefit to anyone considering an engineering career as it is a foundation of the engineering skill-set. The choice of A level is not our first consideration – if the universities recognise a specific set of A level qualifications to their course then this is the most important consideration. Our choices are largely influenced by the aptitude and attitude of the individual, their chosen discipline as a fit to our requirements, a desire to work and learn in our environment and the team fit.

An Engineering A-level will certainly be looked on favorably and as the A-level gets more embedded an individual with an engineering A-level may possibly be looked at more positively. The maths is important as joining either our apprenticeship programme or our engineering training programme in order to show a level of qualification and for us to be confident that students will manage when they do their BTEC or HNC in Mechanical Engineering. However we are also equally interested in the personality and desire of an individual, how they will work in a team etc.
