Are apprenticeships better to get into software engineering than university?

Watch Topic

for a couple of years now I've wanted to be a software engineer. Now, I'm starting to consider, is university or an apprenticeship better to get into this field?

It depends what your reasoning is for the role. In my opinion apprenticeships are better because university is very theoretical but apprenticeships focus on more current professional skills/knowledge and application of this knowledge. You also get multiple years experience in a company building confidence working on real life projects. Additionally, you may build a network of professionals who can reference you and support you in continuing your career post apprenticeship. You're also offered a job at the company at the end of your apprenticeship, given you perform well in your time [link removed], [link removed] Comp Sci might be better if you really want to go down the academic & research route - Master's & PhD, but for example in my department, the head of the department says he is happy to fund further study if you're an apprentice. This isn't a given though, so that opportunity is *possibly* there if you can negotiate [link removed] are increasingly becoming very competitive though, so it's not much "easier" getting in.
