Legal Solicitor Apprentice at TLT LLP – Bristol

'Every apprenticeship in law is different — find the one that aligns with you.'

About Tim

My name is Tim and I am a Legal Solicitor Apprentice at TLT LLP, based in the Bristol office. At A-Level, I studied Business, History and Philosophy & Ethics, and I am now in my first year studying law with BPP Law School!

1. What’s the #1 thing you love about your job?

The best part is how supportive everyone has been. Being able to speak to fellow apprentices, a great early careers team and my direct working team has not only been enjoyable but also very helpful when it comes to balancing the apprenticeship.

2. What was the biggest challenge shifting from school to work?

It can be challenging when work gets busy and you have deadlines to meet with both university and work. However, it is incredibly rewarding when you complete these tasks.

3. How do you handle exams while working?

TLT have been very good in terms of respecting our study days, and we are not expected to perform any work tasks on these days. Managing this balance has not prevented me from continuing with all my hobbies, and these actually help me manage the stress of work and uni.

4. What does your week actually look like?

I am in the office 2–3 days a week usually. It has been nice having at least one day working from home a week as there are benefits of working in the office and working from home.

5. Why did you choose an apprenticeship over university?

I chose this route over university mainly because I understand how competitive entering any career is these days and how valuable real experience is to combat this.

6. What’s your go-to office lunch?

If I am treating myself, it’s walking to the St Nicholas Food Market and trying loads of different foods. (I do sometimes just choose the shorter walk to a Tesco meal deal.)

7. How do you switch off after work?

I find exercising or playing sports useful as this allows me to put 100% focus into something else for that period of time. I love padel and squash at the minute!

Top Tip

8. What’s one thing you wish you knew when you were 17?

How different each apprenticeship in law is. Every firm will be running theirs slightly differently, so just ensure you give the job description a good read to see if it aligns with yourself! Good luck on your journey.
