Solicitor Apprentice at TLT LLP – Bristol

About Matilda

My name is Matilda and I am a Solicitor Apprentice at TLT LLP in Bristol, currently working towards my Level 7 Solicitor Apprenticeship. I studied English Literature, Law and Religious Studies for my A-levels.

1. What do you love most about your job?

What I love most about my job is the people around me who have been so supportive and helpful throughout the start of my professional career. I am surrounded by knowledgeable yet personable colleagues who make my job so enjoyable while teaching me so much along the way.

2. What was the biggest challenge moving from school to work?

The biggest challenge has been learning to work more independently. In school, I felt closely guided by my teachers, with little room to go wrong. Stepping into my job meant becoming comfortable making my own decisions and trusting my judgement. Although I received plenty of guidance, I was initially terrified of making mistakes. Over time, being given the space to figure things out has boosted my confidence massively and helped me grow.

3. How do you manage your work and study balance?

We are given one study day a week to focus on degree content and attend online workshops. We are not expected to complete work on this day, which makes the balance manageable. During exam season it can be more challenging, but with some weekend revision I am able to stay on top of both work and study.

4. What is your working pattern like?

Excluding my study day, I work from home one day a week and spend three days in the office. The flexibility is great, but being in the office is especially valuable early in my career. I learn so much from experienced colleagues, even by overhearing conversations. I also really enjoy socialising with peers at lunch and forming friendships.

5. Why did you choose the Solicitor Apprenticeship route?

I initially planned to study Law at university, thinking it was the only route to becoming a solicitor. Once I discovered the Solicitor Apprenticeship, I was instantly sold. I learn best by absorbing knowledge from experienced professionals, asking questions, and applying learning in real situations — which is exactly what the apprenticeship offers.

6. What’s your go-to office lunch?

I try to prep my lunch for the week and bring it in with me — but I also love visiting the local food markets with my fellow apprentices for lunch, which is always lovely.

7. How do you switch off after work?

I’ve recently got into reading and I’m loving thrillers at the moment. I also enjoy a good TV series — I’m currently watching Grey’s Anatomy (again!).

8. What’s your top tip for students?

Take the time to truly understand what motivates you and how those motivations align with your future goals. Once I recognised that I thrive in environments that challenge me, everything made more sense. My path became clearer because I understood where I wanted to be — both personally and professionally.
