What do people in Software Development and Cybersecurity roles do most of the time?

Watch Topic

I am struggling to decide what route I should into. I would like to a rough idea on which of these two to go down before I apply to University. I don't mean the best, most exciting work, I mean the day-to-day stuff.

Any help is GREATLY appreciated.

Bear in mind the work you do LARGELY depends on the company & department you work in/at. Things you could do as a - Software Engineer:- Communicate with teams/customers on features they want to introduce to applications or processes. This means a lot of meetings and [link removed] You then research how this can be done, and if you know that… then you write the code &/or configure the physical parts to implement the change. ([link removed] if you work at META you may build an API for a new feature in the Facebook app or on whatsApp | if you work for McLaren, you may hook up a measuring instrument to scan the road as the car drives, then go back to office to reconfigure the measuring instrument to be more accurate or get code to pull that data into reports for drivers/engineers to edit aerodynamic design or autonomous driving capabilities | if you work for JP Morgan, you could write python Code to create an ML model to predict how stock values change against inflation rates or election periods in certain countries)- You review this code with customers regularly until you feel it’s ready and customers agree it fits requirements. - You then release this feature to productionCyber Security:To be honest what you could be doing may be similar, but the focus is based on security & networks (this is why I say it depends on company). If you work for the a defence/highly confidential company you’ll have to consider security alot even if you’re a software engineer but I’ve heard Cyber is a bit misleading for the hacker type stuff you may see on social [link removed] most analyse security vulnerabilities in how the company is writing code, exchanging information, giving access to company creations or owned assets - (Headquarters, products, Documents, Network systems). So yeah writing/typing/producing documentation on how to protect the company. (Policies, frameworks, best practices)Penetration testing - so trying to test the protection measures you’ve put [link removed] is involved but I think it’s much less than what you’d get a software engineer if that’s your thing… probably say as a software engineer you program for 50% of your job and cyber security 30%? Again may depend on company and job title.
