I used to be sure on wanting to complete a mechatronics degree apprenticeship but now I'm really into AI so considering to get into robotics AI specifically but I feel like it will be harder to get into a degree apprenticeship related to that so maybe I should do a course in uni instead to get better chances but the idea of uni does not seem great for me , so I was stuck on what to do. What would you suggest?I initially planned to take a gap year build my CV more and hopefully get into the job
Asking about whether to get into uni despite not being fond of the idea
Hi Steph, thank you for your question! It's great to see you're exploring your career options and robotics AI seems like a great field to work in. I understand there are very few opportunities for a degree apprenticeship in AI. However, I would suggest looking into both routes just so you are well informed of what options you have. There is no rule that says you cannot apply to both apprenticeships and university and decide what you'd prefer later on. As you are in year 12, it is worth building your extra curricular activities related to AI and robotics so that you are in a strong position to apply for degree apprenticeships. You could also take the university route and do spring and summer placements as well as a year in industry to get the industrial experience you'd like. However, if you are adamant that you do not want to go to university, then taking a gap year, building your experience and then applying to degree apprenticeships may be the way to go. I'm sure once you have the relevant experience, you'll be an exceptional candidate for companies who are hiring apprentices. It is also worth noting that year on year, there are more apprenticeship opportunities being released so do keep a look out all the time. I hope my advice was useful and if you have anymore questions, don't hesitate to ask!
