Career planning for 6th formers

In my experience it can be really tricky to engage with students in 6th form who have busy schedules and don't always know how to even get started in planning their careers. I think the best you can do is engage with Graduate and Apprenticeship employers and ask them to come into the school, either for a careers fair, drop in session or short presentation, and use this as an opportunity to try to demonstrate the variety of options out there, and how important planning is. Once students have had that initial, albeit brief, contact with an employer it often sparks interest and they become much keener to make time in their personal schedules to take up work experience, or at least work with a careers service to discuss their options. If interest is strong, you could even ask an employer to come back in to run a more focussed skills or employability session to build on the momentum.
