Questions regarding future career in rail

I recently started my level 3 engineering course with a passion for trains and the railways plus a dream ambition to become a train driver so I would like to know:

1. Would being a rail engineer apprentice and perhaps a full time engineer be helpful in gaining relevant experience towards achieving a train driver placement in the future.
2. What would be the certain aspects you would be looking in a student becoming an engineering apprentice. 
3. Are there rail apprenticeships around Hertfordshire? preferably around the western/central parts.
4. Are there work experience opportunities or volunteer work  relatable to be a train driver/ rail engineer.
