Can I begin a high-skilled job in rail without going to uni? If so, how?
I'm in the process of applying for further education but I'm not sure if university it's for me. I'm interested in studying engineering and I would like know what opportunities are there related to engineering.
At Siemens Rail Automation, we offer Advanced and Higher apprenticeships where you work alongside your studies at a local college (to gain NVQ and HNC). They take between 2 to 4 years to complete. Please have a look here for more details: [link removed]
At HS2, we work very closely with the National College for High Speed Rail who partnered with employers to design a curriculum that sets new standards in technical training, combining learning at the college with real work experience, so you know you’re getting the right skills and experience that will help you build your career.
The college opened this academic year and is delivering a High Speed Rail and Infrastructure Higher Apprenticeship (Level 4) as well as a Certificate of Higher Education in High Speed Rail and Infrastructure (Cert HE). The curriculum will grow to encompass further qualifications in the future, including the ability to specialise in areas such as rolling stock.

Chiltern offer a 4 year advanced apprenticeship in Engineering Maintenance (Level 3 NVQ). Also offered together with on-job training is a BTEC Level 3 in Mechanical Engineering and an HNC in Mechanical engineering. We now recruit 4 apprentices per year starting in September, however I am currently advertising for engineering apprentices to commence the course in January. This may lead to a permanent job as one of our skilled service staff.
