How are interviews for university structured? Is there anything we should be prepared for?

University interviews are usually one‑to‑one or small panel conversations with academic staff and can take place in person or online, lasting anywhere from 10 minutes to an hour. They are designed to understand how you think and whether you’re a good fit for the course, rather than to catch you out. You should be prepared to explain why you want to study the subject, why you’ve chosen that university, and to talk confidently about your personal statement, including any reading, projects or experience you’ve mentioned. For some courses, particularly Medicine, Law, creative subjects and Oxbridge courses, you may also be asked subject‑specific or problem‑solving questions, discuss a piece of work, or present a portfolio. Interviewers are looking for enthusiasm, curiosity, clear communication and willingness to engage, so good preparation, genuine interest and asking thoughtful questions at the end are key.
