Why did you pick apprenticeship over university?

Watch Topic

Do you feel like you’re missing out on the experience? Would you rather earn money than spend it? Would you recommend just going straight into a job?

Hi Eleanor,I'll answer your four questions individually (in future, try and keep it to 1 or 2 please!).1) I picked a degree apprenticeship over university because I knew the general direction I wanted to take with an undergraduate degree, but I was not set on a specific path. Therefore, when I came across an opportunity to learn on the job and work full time, whilst earning a salary and still gaining a paid-for university degree, it was a no-brainer. I was basically "giving up nothing" by not going to university, since I wasn't 100% set on it in the first [link removed]) That being said, yes, you do miss out on some of the uni experience. Whether this is something you 'regret' is up to the individual. I personally do not mind that I missed out on it, since I know I gained many more benefits by going down the apprenticeship route. Additionally, there is still an "apprenticeship experience", where you get to do and see things that a university student wouldn't be able to, like conferences, business trips, etc. 3) Not sure what this means, but with my salary I'm able to earn money and save, whilst also being able to spend and enjoy my lifestyle. For the most part, you get more flexibility than being on student [link removed]) It's a very context-specific question, but I would personally not recommend going straight into a job from A-levels, assuming there's no qualification included (like apprenticeships or trade schools). I believe at this age, you should be focused on personal development and furthering your education so that you have a higher ceiling in the future, rather than going straight into a job for the sake of earning money now. It's about weighing up short-term vs long-term [link removed] that all helps.
