Is it a genuinely enjoyable route to take, or is the workload overly heavy?

I think it is definitely an enjoyable route to take, although it can be daunting it provides you with so many new experiences which accelerate your personal and professional growth. In terms of workload, I think that can be managed through communication. There are periods where workload can be intense but that's when it most important to plan ahead, manage your time and let your manager know and keeps all parties informed. This way you can keep a reputation of being reliable and credible which is very important.
