65% of 16-year-olds don’t know about sixth form bursaries

Almost two-thirds of 16-year-olds don't know that they could get up to £1,200 a year to support them during their studies.

Government research, reported in the Times Educational Supplement, found that just 36 per cent of pupils had heard of the bursary – called The 16 to 19 Fund.

The fund is available to disadvantaged pupils who might not otherwise be able to afford education or training. You have to meet certain criteria to apply.

It’s been around since 2001 and replaced what was known as the Education Maintenance Allowance in England.
