Starting salary: Competitive
Location: Birmingham and Derby
Duration: 4 years
Can you see yourself creating the ‘brains’ behind cutting-edge electric aircrafts or nuclear submarines? As we pioneer new solutions to become net zero for our company and our customers, the software that controls our power systems will be vital. Join us as a Software Engineering Degree Apprentice in one of the fastest growing areas within Rolls-Royce and help shape our future as well as your own.
Everyone is unique, so every Rolls-Royce journey is different too. We'll help you to find your way and discover your potential. Your unique personality, passion, and sense of purpose makes us who we are and a place where everyone belongs. And anything is possible.
The programme
Over four years, you’ll learn from our expert teams, and be involved in embedded, real-time safety critical software and firmware development. And across key areas of our business, Civil Aerospace and Nuclear Submarines. As well as getting on-the-job training doing real-life work, you’ll also study for a software engineering degree at the University of Derby. Together, this will give you a solid foundation for an exciting future, which could see you becoming a development specialist or leading large-scale projects in systems and software.
What you’ll do
Through a series of long-term placements, project-based work and shorter training courses you’ll learn essential skills in each stage of the software development lifecycle – everything from design implementation to verification, digital data and cyber security.
Day to day, you’ll be developing solutions for safety critical applications in small teams, enhancing and maintaining the software that provides the ‘brains’ behind powerful jet engines and nuclear submarines.
What you'll need
5 GCSEs at grade 4/C which must include Maths and English Language. Plus 3 A-levels at grade C or above including Maths, or an Extended BTEC Level 3 at DDM, or a T-Level at Distinction in a STEM subject (equates to 96 UCAS points). Obtained or predicted.
Beyond your academic achievements, we’re looking for someone with a deep interest in technology and robotics. Perhaps, you’re already starting to master programming using Raspberry Pi or Arduino. Or even exploring how to interface with hardware through small robotics projects. On top of this you’ll be an analytical thinker, creative problem solver, as well as someone who’s ready to learn and works well as part of a team.
Due to the nature of our work in Defence, we’re unable to employ anyone who doesn’t have the legal right to live and work in the UK and if you have spent more than three months outside of the UK in the last five years (e.g. travelling, working, living), we might not be able to employ you. This role is subject to Full UK Security Check Clearance issued by the United Kingdom Security Vetting. To work for the Rolls-Royce Submarines Business an individual has to hold a minimum of a Security Check (SC) clearance without any caveats to that clearance. Rolls-Royce will support the application for Security Clearance if the individual does not currently already have this in place.
What you’ll get
- A competitive starting salary, with annual pay rises
- Fully sponsored degree in software engineering
- Competitive pension and 33 days’ holiday per year (including bank holidays)
- Career support from day one
Applications open until 28th February 2023
