As a TfL building surveyor, you will be part of the world renowned TfL Engineering. You will gain the unique experience of working as a building surveyor on essential infrastructure designed to keep London moving. You will assist in a wide variety of construction projects in the TfL portfolio, from routine maintenance to major station redevelopments.
TfL has a wide variety of properties ranging from historic listed buildings to major transport interchanges and depots. Any one of which you may be asked to survey and give reasoned advice to those who are responsible for their upkeep.
As your training develops, you will be able to identify building defects and advise on cost effective and appropriate ways to deal with them, as well as providing answers to a wide range of construction related issues.

What you’ll need
- 5 GCSE’s Grade A* – C or Grade 4 and above including Maths and English language (or equivalent)
- You must be 18 years of age by 1 September 2019 to be eligible for this scheme

What will I be doing?
Some of the placements you could complete are Major Projects, Commercial Development, Asset Operations and Facilities Management.
As your training develops, you’ll be able to identify building defects and advise on cost effective and appropriate ways to deal with them. You’ll support the review designs, checking they are safe for public use, manage rental income, conduct asset condition surveys and support internal refurbishments.
Where can this career take me?
You could progress into a Building Surveying post with TfL Infrastructure Engineering Built Environment Team.
This could lead to further career development opportunities such as following further studies to achieve a Level 6 BSc in Building Surveying where you will be responsible for the design and implementation of any number of projects, such as step free access across the stations.
We could also support you to achieve chartership with the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (Assoc RICS).
