If you're at sea for months, what does the boat offer in terms of entertainment?
Most people take their own entertainment on their laptops etc. but there may be films, and gaming consoles on board the vessel for you to use. It varies depending on the ship. Crews normally share the entertainment they have.

The length of time you are sea varies entirely on the company you work for. You can be on a ferry working one week on/off, or working deep sea where trips are normally 3-4 months long. During your training you are likely to be away for longer trips to ensure you gain the right amount of sea time to qualify.
How long is the training, on average?
If you are completing a cadetship, then you will complete a three year training course with 12 months of this being at sea for deck cadets, and 8 months for engineering.
Where can we apply for this training? And where about is the training usually
you normally apply for the training through the shipping companies directly, but our website [link removed] gives you a fair view of the industry and should talk you through it step by step. There are a number of nautical colleges around the UK and you will pick one after conversation with the company to determine where you will be studying.

What sort of software do engineers at sea typically work with?
Most of the new ships that are coming up have the most high tech equipment available for shipping. I do not know software brands but i can certainly ask the question and let you know.

How long do you work a day? do you get days off?
This depends on the vessel. When you are training you get days off to study and a normal day on a ship would be 4 hours on 8 hours off, 4 hours off etc. Plenty of downtime, unless in port and the vessel is busy. There are not days off when you qualify as a ship is a 24 hour operation, but to make up for this you get good amounts of leave when you finish on the ship and this can be 3-4 months depending on
the company.

We are located in the humber region, what kind of companies would it be beneficial for us to get in contact with?
Well, being near the Humber you are extremely lucky to have access to companies and ports! P&O are the obvious choice, but there is a 'Green
Humber' initiative that is linking companies up to progress this work. also, Modal Training are not too far form you and a trip to their simulator is well worth a day out! A bit of extra time and i would be able to find you some more if you wish?

Absolutely, but for all stormy days there are a lot of clear days that are amazing for working at sea. every day is a challenge, but it is a lot of fun!
