What apprenticeships are available in England?

An apprenticeship allows you to gain qualifications while learning and earning on the job. Sounds good, right? But it’s hard to know where to start, so we’ve put together this guide to what apprenticeships are available to you right now.

We wanted to know what the higher and degree apprenticeship picture looked like in five major English cities. What career zones have lots of apprenticeships? Are there jobs near you or would you have to move house? We’ve done all the hard work so you don’t have to.

But before you take a look at what opportunities are out there right now in January 2017, here’s a little recap of what apprenticeships are.

Higher apprenticeship = a training programme you do in the workplace where you gain top-level qualifications equivalent to a higher education diploma or even degree.

Degree apprenticeship = a training programme you do in the workplace where you also gain a university degree.

Don’t forget! Some of the apprenticeship courses below have multiple positions available with the same employer.

Apprenticeships - London

There are 54 higher and degree apprenticeship courses on offer within 20 miles of central London. These included some really exciting opportunities, like working for Google, an ice lolly company and even a great charity! The apprenticeships in London came under the following industries:

• Construction [18]
• Digital and IT [18]
• Accountancy [7]
• Legal [2]
• Finance [1]
• Business management and admin [2]
• Science [1]
• Hospitality [1]
• PR [1]
• Engineering [1]
• Healthcare [1]
• Not-for-profit [1]

There were also 718 advanced and a whopping 2758 intermediate apprenticeships within 20 miles of London.

Apprenticeships - Manchester

We found 21 higher and degree apprenticeship courses on offer within 10 miles of Manchester. From IT apprentice at a top bank to apprentice solicitor at a leading law firm, the opportunities look like this:

• Digital and IT [8]
• Construction [7]
• Business management and admin [3]
• Marketing [1]
• Engineering [1]
• Legal [1]

There were 252 advanced and 699 intermediate apprenticeships in Manchester.

Apprenticeships - Newcastle

In Newcastle right now there are 3 higher and degree apprenticeship courses on offer within 10 miles of the city, in the following career zones:

• Digital and IT [2]
• Legal [1]

There were 63 advanced and 360 intermediate apprenticeships in Newcastle.  

Apprenticeships - Birmingham

We came across 15 higher and degree apprenticeships within 10 miles of Birmingham as of January 2017. They fell into these categories:

• Construction [7]
• Digital and IT [5]
• Legal [1]
• Education [1]
• Finance [1]

Plus, there were 179 advanced and 600 intermediate apprenticeships in Birmingham. 

Apprenticeships - Leeds

There are 12 higher and degree apprenticeships on offer in Leeds, in these sectors:

• Digital and IT [3]
• Legal [1]
• Marketing [1]
• Finance [1]
